Sadiq Khan Heads for 3rd Term as London Mayor
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Stephen Castle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Sadiq Khan, the two-term center-left mayor of London, was poised on Saturday to become the first three-time winner of the job by a clearer margin than some of his supporters had predicted. Mr. Khan, from the main opposition Labour Party, was initially elected to the post in 2016, becoming London’s first Muslim mayor, and would now become the first politician to win three consecutive terms since the role was created in 2000. With the Labour Party well ahead in the opinion polls ahead of a looming general election, many analysts had expected Mr. Khan to cruise to a comfortable victory in a city that tends to lean to the left, but some saw the potential for an unexpectedly tight race against Susan Hall, representing Britain’s governing Conservative Party. That prospect quickly faded on Saturday, with Mr. Khan’s party declaring victory and the BBC forecasting him as the winner after results from half of London’s regions showed the mayor exceeding his performance in his last election, in 2021.

Since that is not possible, the service says it's looking to get them to Marines right now, or at least very soon. Over the last five years, the Marine Corps has been improving its counter-drone systems as it looks to reshape the force and compete with near-peer adversaries. US Marines observed targets during a counter-unmanned aircraft system (UAS) range on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. That challenge has only grown, according to officials Tuesday, and the need for the Marine Corps to thwart it is critical.

Arizona took a major step on Wednesday toward scrapping an 1864 law banning abortion, when three Republican lawmakers in the state House of Representatives broke ranks with their party and voted with Democrats to repeal the ban. Republican leaders had thwarted earlier repeal efforts in the two weeks since the Arizona Supreme Court ignited a political firestorm by reviving the Civil War-era law, which outlaws abortions from the moment of conception except to save the mother’s life. “The people of Arizona are waiting for us to get this done,” said Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton, a Democrat, who introduced the one-sentence bill to undo the 1864 law. Many voters denounced the ban — which provides no exceptions for cases of rape or incest — as a draconian intrusion into women’s rights. And some Republicans — including former President Donald J. Trump — said they wanted the Legislature to scrap it quickly, to try to head off a possible election-year backlash.

Iran and its proxy militias launched a barrage of 170 attack drones, 120 ballistic missiles, and 30 cruise missiles at Israel in a massive and unprecedented attack on Saturday night local time, according to the Israel Defense Forces. A few of the ballistic missiles entered Israeli territory and struck targets, including an IDF base, causing minor damage, the military said. The US Army isn't ready to attack across rivers

Yet if the US Army went to war tomorrow, it would lack the equipment, doctrine and experience to launch an attack across a defended river, according to one Army engineer. "The Army has not conducted such an operation since World War II," wrote Maj. Aditya Iyer, an Army engineer, in an essay for the Association of the United States Army. "The current wet-gap crossing doctrine, organization, materiel and leadership are ineffective for division-level wet-gap crossing operations independent from the corps," Iyer warned. "In contrast, the Ukrainian forces had accurate intelligence that showed the Russian troops massing along the river," Iyer said. This ETF seeks to track the largest, most liquid companies involved in oil drilling and selling oil equipment based on market capitalization. However, my trading platform indicates that this will tie up $5,500 of portfolio margin, a significant amount for a potential profit of just $430. Yet, since I'm paying a debit for the $365 call, it also decreases my profit potential from $430 to $133.
